Course Description
This self-paced CAD Technology Laboratory SolidWorks (Advanced) course focuses on advanced projects and computer-based training using SolidWorks software. The supplemental projects and assignments will be based on existing SolidWorks courses. Learning assistance is provided in a designated °®¶¹´«Ã½ lab by an approved °®¶¹´«Ã½ instructor who is trained in SolidWorks software

Course Justification


This is a major employment preparation CTE course for our Design and Manufacturing Technologies Computer-Aided Design program. SolidWorks is a 3-D parametric solid modeler which is similar to other solid modeling programs. This stand-alone, CTE course deepens the student's ability to create and manipulate objects for mutually dependent geometry of "Parent-Child relationships" and understand mechanical design opportunities in mid-range sizes assembles using "In-Context" mode for SolidWorks product design as confirmed by our advisory committee.

  2. Assembly/Exercises using SolidWorks “In-Context†Design documentation approach.
    1. Computer based training modules (CBT) for appropriate assembly creation and explode states.
    2. Interpreting standards for creation of ISO or ANSI GD&T and parametric relations between given assemblies and parts per industry best practices for tolerance stack-up calculations.

Methods of Evaluation


  1. Successful completion of computer aided design assignments with output verifying modeling correctness and precision; use of structured design intent principles, and documentation.
  2. CAD Lab activity - Practice and demonstration of techniques in the student laboratory designed to demonstrate critical thinking skills and to problem solve as required in the assignments and experimental investigations.
  3. A comprehensive final project (engineering documentation package) that includes the correct use of component and assembly models, assembly and detail drawings and worksheets. The documentation package includes CAD modeling and documentation exercises that will require students to summarize, integrate, and critically analyze the major theoretical perspectives, modes of inquiry, and the important core concepts examined throughout the course.

  • Review the complex interdependent geometry of “Parent Child relationships†and exploit mechanical design options in assembles using SolidWorks “In-Context†mode.
  • Augment skill sets on available classroom computer and web based training material for SolidWorks in progressive feature sets.

  • Create an advanced-level Document Package which includes (as assigned) Solid Parts, Assemblies, and Drawings for Parts and Assemblies, using SolidWorks.

Outline


  1. Review the complex interdependent geometry of “Parent Child relationships†and exploit mechanical design options in assembles using SolidWorks “In-Context†mode.
    1. Load and setup application programs for use of Exchange Assemblies of various design table component sets.
    2. Use SolidWorks application commands for complex manipulation of skeleton parts, assembly layouts and component display deviations.
    3. Input design data using large assembly edit feature tools sets to do Bottom Up Design and effectively replace and pattern components.
  2. Augment skill sets on available classroom computer and web based training material for SolidWorks in progressive feature sets.
    1. Analyze mass properties of objects and mechanisms (volume, center of gravity, moments of inertia, etc.)
    2. Use of multifaceted patters & groupings, Simplified Representations, Component Variation, Parameter Driven Parts in assembly mode.
