This course focuses on the development of speed and accuracy in skills learned in the medical office financial procedures course; skills include determining ICD-10 and CPT codes, and completing various types of insurance forms.

This course is part of a CTE program. It was developed based on the California Certifying Board for Medical Assistant's Accreditation Standards required for Health Technology training programs. This course belongs on the Medical Secretary Certificate of Achievement-Advanced. This course trains the students to determine ICD-10 and CPT codes used in medical office and demonstrate various steps in preparing insurance claim forms.

    2. Complete laboratory worksheets that include observations, results and critical analysis.
    3. Document laboratory procedures as outlined in the evaluation of competency.

  1. Demonstrate billing and collection procedures
    1. Prepare patient's monthly statements
    2. Calculate a collection ratio and an accounts receivable ratio
    3. Prepare an age analysis of accounts receivable
    4. Demonstrate proceedings to collect delinquent accounts
    5. Demonstrate telephone collection techniques
    6. Calculate the billing for patients whose insurance includes deductibles and copayments or co-insurance
  2. Demonstrate the various steps in preparing insurance claims forms
    1. Demonstrate obtaining authorizations and referrals
    2. Identify and complete insurance forms for patients covered by Medicare, CHAMPUS, Worker's compensation, and Blue Cross and Blue Shield
    3. Demonstrate maintenance of an insurance claims register
