Course Description
This course teaches the Korean Hangul by applying the natural approach in the classroom. The materials are designed to encourage the students to interact in Korean as naturally and spontaneously as possible. It introduces vocabulary skills, decoding skills, and fundamental sentence structures in the present and past. Pronunciation, grammar, and everyday vocabulary are stressed as indispensable tools for comprehension and expression. Aspects of Korean culture and history are covered as well.

This course meets the GE requirements of °®¶¹´«Ã½ and CSU GE. It belongs to the Certificate of Achievement in Korean and World Languages. It is UC and CSU transferable. It is the first quarter of the elementary-level Korean program. It furthers the development of language skills as a channel of communication and an articulation of culture.

Methods of Evaluation


  1. Reading, writing, listening and speaking assignments(Textbook and Workbook exercises) will be evaluated on the basis of correct usage of basic/simple language functions covered in each lesson.
  2. Periodic written/oral tests and written quizzes will be evaluated on the basis of correct usage of simple/basic vocabulary, grammar points and listening/speaking communication skills.
  3. Midterm and Final exam will be evaluated on the basis of correct usage of grammar and vocabulary and language structures needed to produce basic/simple information for high-frequency situations in familiar contexts.
  4. Pair and small group oral presentations will be evaluated on the basis of producing comprehensible, simple phrases or sentences about familiar topics to reflect a working command of core vocabulary and language structures.
  5. Observation of individual, pair and small group in-class work will be evaluated on the basis of correct usage of basic/simple language functions.

Course Objectives

  • Formulate an understanding of Korean language as the primary expression of Korean culture.
  • Formulate simple/basic linguistic functions relating to high-frequency situations in familiar contexts
  • Distinguish and construct terms of amenities and simple conversation about everyday life activities within the range of some 180 words and expressions.
  • Formulate reading comprehension on the first elementary level of Korean
  • Formulate specific simple/basic grammatical structures by achieving reasonable accuracy when using these structures
  • Demonstrate ability in writing Korean characters using the alphabet, Hangul and writing skills with comprehensible, simple phrases or sentences.
  • Engage in a critical analysis and comparison of the students' own values and cultural assumptions with those of the Korean-speaking countries and communities.

  • Develop reading the Korean alphabet, Hanguel and demonstrate a working command of essential vocabulary (recognize and reproduce some 180 Korean words and expressions) and language structure necessary to request and provide, orally and in writing, basic /simple information relating to high-freqeuncy situations in familiar contexts, such as greetings, introducing friends, locations, family, making requests, and describing people.

  • Derive meaning from short, simple texts on familiar topics, relying on contextual clues to extract the gist and some detail.
