Course Description
This course provides further development of materials presented in Elementary Korean (First Quarter). The focus is on intensive oral practice, which aims to broaden the language functions covered in the first quarter course and add new ones while placing a greater emphasis on student-generated discussion. To enhance comprehension, there is a greater emphasis on the cultural and historical background in the use of language. Written practice is incorporated into the course to further students' understanding of the underlying grammatical and syntactical structures, specifically targeting an extended range of basic/simple information relating to high-frequency situations.

Methods of Evaluation


  1. Reading, writing, listening and speaking assignments will be evaluated on the basis of correct usage of an increasing range of basic/simple language functions covered in each lesson.
  2. Periodic written/oral tests and written quizzes will be evaluated on the basis of correct usage of an increasing range of simple/basic vocabulary, grammar points and listening/speaking communication skills.
  3. Final exam will be evaluated on the basis of correct usage of vocabulary and language structures needed to produce an increasing range of basic/simple information.
  4. Individual, pair and small group oral presentations will be evaluated on the basis of producing comprehensible, simple sentences about familiar topics to reflect a greater working command of core vocabulary and language structures.
  5. Oral presentation on cultural topics will be evaluated on the basis of demonstrating a deeper grasp of social protocols and contributions of Korean-speaking cultures, by analyzing and comparing them to one's own cultures.
  6. Observations of individual, pair and group in-class work will be evaluated on the basis of correct usage of an increasing range of basic/simple language functions at each lesson.
