Course Description
The focus of this course is the application of concepts learned in the theory class. Students will practice conducting health assessments, analyzing trends of data, and planning care based on common assessment findings. Therapeutic communication and interviewing skills will be developed thus increasing comfort in conversing with patients as well as improving the efficacy of data collection. Both NURS 91AL and NURS 91A must be taken and passed concurrently within the same quarter. Failure of either component requires both courses to be retaken.

Course Justification


This is a course in a CTE program that was developed based on requirements from the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN), and input from current/potential healthcare employers and current/future health needs of society. This course belongs on the AS degree in Nursing. This course is a BRN mandated component of the nursing program and exposes students to the clinical practice of the fundamentals of nursing with a non-acute geriatric population in the lab setting. Successful completion of this course is required for students to be eligible for the national licensing exam.

Assignments


  1. Reading assignments from texts, syllabus, and other pertinent articles
  2. Discussion and critical analysis of simulated client interview, demonstrating therapeutic versus non-therapeutic communication
  3. Practice and demonstration competency of required skills
  4. Documentation of clinical assessments following approved college and clinical guidelines.
  5. Clinical simulation exercise

Methods of Evaluation


  1. Final clinical evaluation per the Clinical Evaluation Tool which contains critical elements of performance which will reflect the ability to integrate and critically analyze information and apply concepts in working with simulated client.
  2. Developing interventions and rationales on a written nursing care plan for nursing care for case study patients.
  3. Final skills testing for skill mastery and competency compared to a critical element checklist.
  4. Successful completion of NURS 91A within the same quarter is required to pass NURS 91AL.
