Asian Americans and Asia


Course Description

This course examines how the relationship between the U.S. and Asia has shaped the experiences of Asians in the U.S. and the racial formation of Asian Americans. The course focuses on war and militarism, international political and economic relations, and globalization to analyze their impact on migration, racial politics, economic practices, identity, community formation, sexuality and activism among Asians in the U.S. The course explores historical and contemporary examples from the 19th century to the present to assess efforts by Asian Americans for self-determination in a transnational context.

Student Learning Outcomes

  • Analyze historical and/or contemporary political economic linkages between the US and Asia and how they have shaped the experiences and identities of Asians in the US.
  • Evaluate the ways Asians in the US have engaged in global relations between the US and Asia to shape the creation and flows of goods, ideas, and/or cultures.
  • Complete a project utilizing critical analysis, research, and writing skills to assess the relationship between the US and Asia and its impact on on an issue that significantly affects an Asian American population.
