Elementary French (First Quarter)
Course Description
This course is an introduction to the language and cultures of the French-speaking countries. French's basic speaking, listening, reading, and writing will be introduced and practiced within a cultural framework. The emphasis will be put on the language as an expression of culture.
Student Learning Outcomes
- Derive meaning from short, simple texts on familiar topics, relying on contextual clues to extract the gist and some detail.
- Demonstrate a working command of essential vocabulary and language structures necessary to request and provide, orally and in writing, basic/simple information relating to high-frequency situations in familiar contexts such as greetings, introductions, leave-taking, description of family members, daily activities and hobbies, expression of dislikes and future plans.
- Compose comprehensible, simple phrases or sentences about familiar topics to reflect a working command of core vocabulary and language structures.
- Demonstrate a cursory grasp of social protocols and contributions of French-speaking cultures, by analyzing and comparing them to one's own cultures.
