You will probably hear this ad nauseum until November: so much is at stake for public education in this election! There is a lot of activity happening around both of these issues. Enrollment: The not-so-great news: As a district, we ended our 2011-12 academic year with 300 FTES (Full Time Equivalent Students) below our funded base of 29,750 FTES. FTES determines apportionment, which is the revenue we get from the state. Lost FTES = lost apportionment/revenue = fewer classes we can offer and teach and fewer services for students. The good news: In the 2012-13 academic year, we still have the opportunity to restore this lost revenue. Our summer 2012 enrollments were, unfortunately, about 20% down districtwide from last summer. We had some spirited discussions in Academic Senate to generate ideas to help boost enrollment, and faculty ideas are being put into See President's Message continued on page two, column one Vice Presidents Message Randy Bryant Welcome back to the new school year. Hi my name is Randy Bryant and I am the new Vice President of the ý College Academic Senate. I thought I would introduce myself. I am the Department Head and an Instructor for the ý College Automotive Technology Department. I teach the Chassis and Air Conditioning classes and have been a fulltime instructor for 11 years. I have worked as an Automotive Technician for 25 years. I am a retired Chief Master Sergeant from the U.S. Air Force Reserve and served for over 30 years. I have a Bachelors Degree in Emergency and Disaster Management and a Masters Degree in Education with a focus in Professional Technical Education Management. I have served as a Senator on the Academic Senate Executive Committee and on the Instructional Planning and Budget Team (IPBT) in one capacity or another for the last nine years. Over those years I have attended numerous conferences and the one thing that stands out to me is how great our See "Vice Page two, column two President's Message From Page one action. Namely, we are helping to coordinating on-the-ground volunteer support for new students during Week 1 of Fall quarter. Besides providing student and faculty volunteer helpers to assist with help desks outside of academic division offices and student services such as Financial Aid, we are also setting up more volunteers and help desks in high traffic areas such as the Campus Center, the Main Quad, the new Media & Learning Center. Student leaders, including ý Student Trustee Vincent Mendoza, and DASB have been great partners in mobilizing volunteers. With laptops and other smart devices at hand, hopefully volunteers will be able to assist new students on things like how to successfully navigate and access MyPortal, course information, prerequisite clearance processes, and student services. We may be able to help retain students who might otherwise throw up their hands and give up if they feel intimidated or encounter even small roadblocks to successfully enroll. November 6 election: With 11 (yes, ELEVEN) propositions on the ballot this November, it is a daunting task to get informed about what they all mean and whats at stake for us. See "President's Page three, column one Vice From Page one shared government model is. The shared governance model that we have here at ý is a model for the state. I will do my best to maintain and enhance the Senates relationship with the campus. I fully support shared governance and hope you will too. One of the jobs of the Vice President is to co-chair the Instructional Planning and Budeting Team (IPBT). This year the work on IPBT will be very challenging as regards our budget. I would encourage us all to get involved with campus efforts in regards to the coming election. The work that we all do now before the election will have a direct impact on our budget. If there was ever a time that you thought you would get involved for the good of the campus, that time is now. Current Academic Senate Needs: If you are interested in any of these positions, please contact Randy Bryant, Senate VP (bryantrandy@fhda.edu) --one current part-time faculty to serve as Part-Time Senator (to finish one-year term vacated by previous Senator) --one full-time tenured faculty to serve on the PDL (Professional Development Leave) Committee --more full-time tenured faculty to serve as at-large members on Tenure Review Committees, as well as Equal Opportunity Representatives for Hiring Committees. President's Message From Page two I find FACCCs and Community College League of California websites (HYPERLINK "http://www.faccc.org"www.faccc.org and HYPERLINK "http://www.ccleague.org"www.ccleague.org) to be very informative about what is at stake for California Community Colleges, in particular in breaking down the differences between the two competing education tax initiatives, Proposition 30 and Proposition 38. Our own Board of Trustees have publicly stated support of Proposition 30 (the Governors tax initiative). The election is a great teaching opportunity for ALL faculty to engage their students more deeply in the world around them (in particular, to encourage eligible students to register and exercise their right to vote on issues that directly impact them) and exercise critical thinking. While it is our civic responsibility to engage the election, it is not appropriate or legal to use public resources to advocate for any particular candidate or initiative using public resources. Political Science instructor and Peralta Community Colleges District Trustee Nicky Gonzales-Yuen has written an excellent short guide to how to engage in teaching about election issues , titled Engaging in Political Advocacy versus Teaching Political Engagement: What we can do, what we cannot do and what we should do.. We have posted this guide on the Academic Senate website, HYPERLINK "http://www.deanza.edu/gov/academicsenate"http://www.deanza.edu/gov/academicsenate. My Vote our Future is a non-partisan, non-profit campaign to register new voters, educate them, and mobilize them to vote. Go to their web site to learn more about November election and to see some amazing GOTV videos in eight languages made by our students (HYPERLINKmyvoteourfuture.org.). This project is collaboration between the Institute of Community and Civic Engagement at ý College, Parents for Great Education and the Santa Clara Registrar of Voters. Many of our students do not vote, because they have not been walked through the process of how to vote or how to decide on what to vote for. Please consider spending some time with them on The mechanics of voting, which can be found at: HYPERLINK "http://www.sos.ca.gov/elections/voting-in-california/how-to-vote.htm"http://www.sos.ca.gov/elections/voting-in-california/how-to-vote.htm. Turbovote (HYPERLINK "http://www.turbovote.org"http://www.turbovote.org) is a site that makes it easy for students to register to vote, get a vote-by-mail ballot, and get text and email reminders about voting. How to use Smartvoter (HYPERLINK "http://www.smartvoter.org/"http://www.smartvoter.org) to help figure out how to decide their positions on initiatives and which candidate to support. This is a nonpartisan web based source that is much easier to navigate than the vote guide. No matter what your academic discipline, it is appropriate for you to help develop their civic capacity. Here are some more things you can do: Invite My Vote our Future to come to your class to register students Contact: Benjamin Pacho: HYPERLINK "mailto:benjaminpacho@gmail.com"benjaminpacho@gmail.com, or Valerie Medina: HYPERLINK "valerienmedina@gmail.com"valerienmedina@gmail.com Consider giving extra credit for engaging in the election by voting and showing up with an I voted sticker, working the polls, getting others to vote, registering others, etc. (be sure to have options for international students and undocumented students who cannot themselves vote). Having debates in your classes on election issues. Attending an election related event. A number of voter education events will be held on campus this fallcontact instructor & Institute of Community & Civic Engagement (ICCE) Director Cynthia Kaufman for more info (HYPERLINK "mailto:kaufmancynthia@fhda.edu"kaufmancynthia@fhda.edu) I am always excited to see students and faculty return to campus and to see our campus be the bustle of activity that is a proud ý tradition. Please tell me about the great things that you and your students are doing. I am always happy to spread the word about these activities. Likewise, please also contact me about any concerns you have about academic and professional matters. We are here to support and improve faculty and academic life at ý. _________________________________ Is there a particular topic you would like to see in The Newsletter?
