The question is impossible to answer with confidence because of the unknown make up of any accreditation visiting team and lack of precedent at other institutions. What we do know is that Standard IIC: Library and Learning Support Services (See StandardIIC.pdf), includes a descriptive summary and five sub categories which cover; physical aspects of the building, staffing, instruction, equipment and research collections, access, security and collaboration with outside organizations. Standard IIC requires the college to demonstrate proficiency in all library functions; instruction, reference, circulation, reserves, acquisitions, cataloging, interlibrary loan, computer labs as well as budget and staffing. To take library collections as an example, multiple functional areas within the library make this possible. Faculty librarians select materials to be added to the collection, acquisitions orders and receives the material, and finally, cataloging makes the items available on the library server before moving the item to the public shelves. Library services received a very positive evaluation by the visiting accreditation team, but due to the loss of staff positions in the past, the current staffing level is barely adequate to maintain existing service levels. Any additional cuts mean reduced services to students and faculty. Who uses the library services? Faculty use the library when they bring in classes for library orientations, put textbooks and other instructional material on reserve at the library, and when they suggest a title of item for the library to purchase. Students use the library when they use the facility to study alone or in groups, when they check out a reserve item, book or DVD, when they receive library instruction either through a library orientation and when they use one of the librarys computer labs to complete and print out an assignment. Putting those words into numbers: The library gate count in 2010-11 was 784,860 (See Library.Gate.Count.pdf) The librarys computer labs checked out computers 123,865 times Students used the EbscoHost database to perform 473,281 searches (See Library.Ebsco.Usage.pdf) The library with the assistance of the ý College Researcher produces a Demographics of Students with Library Captured Library Activity report annually. A student with captured library activity is a student who checks out a book, video, computer or other item from the library. These quarterly reports from 2010-11 show that targeted student populations use library services at a level higher than their numbers in the general student population. The data on African American, Filipino, and Latino students in Fall 2010 is representative of this pattern. Library services are vital to the success of all students, but particularly important for our targeted student populations. (See Library-2.Ethnicity.2010M.pdf, Library-1.Ethnicity2010F.pdf & Library.Ethnicity2011W.pdf) Fall 2010 % General Student Population% Library UsersAfrican American3.84.6Filipino5.36Latino12.413 It should be noted that Captured Library Activity does not wholly capture all library users. Students who use the library as a study space or who access databases remotely are not included in these numbers, so the library provides essential academic services to even more students of the targeted student populations than is reflected in this report. It appears that you have already starting moving towards the implementation of a virtual library. What does that mean in terms of staffing and funding? The library has offered access to databases from off campus for more than ten years. Several years ago the library set up an EZProxy server to make this easier and more secure. Using the EZProxy server, students use their student ID to authenticate to library purchased databases. Only currently registered students have access to databases as the EZProxy server is updated regularly with data from Banner. In recent years the library has purchased access to a shared collection of approximately 20,000 electronic books, which is available 24/7. Virtual library or virtual library services refer to offering an online extension of physical services, the most common two being reference and instruction. Libraries offer virtual services to augment services, not to replace the traditional face-to-face service. The most common example is the creation of a virtual reference desk to serve the research needs of distance learners. Offering virtual library services costs money both in purchasing the software and in staffing for the additional service. How many hardcopy books are checked out? The short answer is 60,517. The slightly longer answer is 14,058 books from the second floor circulating collection and 46,459 books from the reserves collection. With the annual support of DASB (this year $15,000) and the cooperation of faculty, the library has built up the reserve collection to support student learning and success. As textbook prices continue to rise, the reserve collection offers a much needed alternative to the purchase of expensive textbooks for our most vulnerable students. The truly long answer is: 60,517 Books 6,024 DVDs 123,865 computers* 7,469 kits (includes calculators, laptops and other) (See Library.Circulation.pdf) * Students are able to check out a computer from library computer labs for two hours at a time. Computer lab usage remains extremely high as students need the labs to complete and print class assignments and conduct library research. How do you currently fund your electronic databases? Are there possibilities of partnerships with public libraries to share access to databases? The library spent $65,528 in 2010-11 on database purchases. Of this amount, $62,005 was purchased at steep discount through the Community College Library Consortium ( HYPERLINK "http://www.cclibraries.org/index.html" http://www.cclibraries.org/index.html). $58,541 (90%) was purchased with Lottery funds, the remainder was purchased by B budget funds. (See Library.Database.Purchases.pdf) The three largest database vendors, EbscoHost, Gale and Proquest offer a variety of database packages tailored specifically for their customers. Public libraries purchase packages that largely support the information needs of K-12 students, local businesses and investors, and the general public. The databases that ý and other colleges and universities subscribe to include large collections of academic journals that are a requirement for many class assignments. The user needs of public and college libraries are quite different, so cooperative purchases of databases, even if legal, would be problematic. Regardless, the library is fully confident that our purchase of databases through the consortium extends the lowest prices possible.
